Poncho with monkey 1935.32.0137
The motif consists of a feline with a long tail ending in a head. Coming out of the chin is another long “tail”, at the end of which is a little human figure with long, loose, flowing hair. (Cf. similar figure on 1935.32.0179)
MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUE
Ground weave: warp and weft in yellowish cotton. Embroidery: camelid fibre in purple, pink, green, yellow, dark green, blue (on grey fibre), white, grey, red and black (corroded). Technique: plain weave, cloth woven in one piece with a neck opening woven as for a kelim slit. The embroidery is in block colour style, with outlining in the same shade as the background shade. Fringing fastened to the outer edges with rows of cross-knit loop stitch.
