Borders with human figure 1935.32.0181
The motif consists of a human figure with outstretched arms and legs and “snakes” issuing from the body in 5 places. The figure has a headdress, a wing and a large mouth with hooks and ornamental protrusions. All the motifs lie in the same direction, but turned alternately to the right or to the left. The cross-knit loop stitch edging has an S patterning, with a little head at each end. Cf. 1935.32.0196 a + b
MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUE
Ground weave: warp and weft, reddish brown cotton. Embroidery: camelid fibre in black, dark purple, purple, greyish blue, light blue, yellow, light yellow, red, pink, undyed white, grey and brown, red and white mixed. Technique: plain weave ground for the embroidery. Embroidered in block colour style. L-shaped borders were cut from a poncho and stitched to supporting fabric. A 1 cm wide fringe was attached with 5 rows of cross-knit loop stitch. The borders for the neck opening were also stitched onto supporting fabric.
