Fragment of red cat border 1935.32.0172
The motif consists of geometrically composed cats with long zig-zag shaped “snakes” emerging from the head of the largest cat. The patterning consists entirely of figures within figures, i.e. cats within cats in many different sizes. Cf. also 1935.35.0175.
MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUE
Ground weave: warp and weft in dark blue cotton. Embroidery: camelid fibre in yellow, red, green and dark blue. Technique: embroidery on plain weave cloth, a variation of the so-called linear style. Fringe running down one long side, attached with cross-knit loop stitch. The fringe is ca 2 cm long. The border was cut off at either end and then sewn onto 1935.32.0130.
